Rae Coleman - Rae’s diverse experiences in education, community building, and personal development would later inform her 16-year career at the Mental Health Center of Boulder, Colorado. Her work in mental health and her warm, empathetic nature helped her develop a strong reputation as someone who could bring people together and foster a sense of belonging. Upon retiring in 2004, Rae returned to Beaverton to help care for her mother and give back to the community where she grew up. She quickly immersed herself in volunteer work, contributing in various roles at the Elsie Stuhr Center. One of her most meaningful roles was facilitating the "Circle of Friends" group. It was at the Elsie Stuhr Health Fair in 2013 that Rae first learned about the Village Movement, a grassroots, volunteer-led initiative aimed at helping older adults remain in their homes as they age. Over the years, Viva Village grew from just 20 members to more than 200. Through it all, Rae remained deeply involved, advocating for Viva Village, its members, and its volunteers. Her ability to welcome new people, understand their strengths, and integrate them into the community has been essential to Viva Village’s success. Today, the organization provides more than 35 rides a month to medical appointments, therapy sessions, shopping, and social activities. Viva Village has become a thriving, vibrant community, and Rae’s dedication has been instrumental in shaping it into what it is today. Her impact reaches far beyond the organization itself, radiating out to the broader Beaverton community. Through her leadership and warmth, Rae has created a network of support, stability, and connections for older adults who wish to age in place, making her an invaluable asset to Beaverton’s aging population.
